Overview

Compendium of Cards is a high-paced, turn-based fantasy game that reveals the story of the Three Nations of Sabaton through a compelling merger of narrative and play. Players build and manage a card collection, fuse and upgrade cards, and battle across different game types in pursuit of strategic depth. We handled the game design and development end to end in Unity.

The challenge

Balancing depth, story and pace

A turn-based card game lives or dies on the balance between strategic depth and momentum. The systems behind card collection, fusion and upgrading had to feel rewarding without overwhelming players, the different game types needed to stay distinct and replayable, and the whole experience had to carry an unfolding fantasy storyline rather than feel like a series of disconnected matches.

Our approach

Research first, then build

We started with the core loop: how players acquire cards, how they combine and improve them, and what keeps them coming back between matches. From there we designed an inventory and progression system around fusion and upgrades, layered in multiple game types for variety, and tied it all to the narrative of the Three Nations of Sabaton. The game was built in Unity with custom artwork prepared in Photoshop.

Compendium of Cards shipped as a polished, turn-based fantasy experience that pairs an unfolding storyline with genuinely deep card play. Built in Unity, it gives players a full progression loop of collecting, fusing and upgrading cards across multiple game types, set within the world of the Three Nations of Sabaton.
