Overview

Curse of the Sunken Temple is a VR gaming platform aimed at escape room operators and arcade owners. It holds a multitude of co-operative levels in a never-before-seen underwater environment that reacts and adjusts difficulty based on how players progress. On top of the player experience, the platform gives operators control over all levels and the order in which they are added to the game. We designed and built it in Unity.

The challenge

A VR experience two audiences have to love

A location-based VR platform has to satisfy two very different groups at once. Players need an immersive, co-operative adventure that stays thrilling without becoming frustrating, while operators need real control over how the experience runs in their venue. The environment had to feel genuinely new, and the difficulty had to flex to suit each group of players.

Our approach

Research first, then build

We started from how the platform would actually be used on the floor of an escape room or arcade, then designed around it. The result is a system where difficulty reacts and adjusts to player progression in real time, and operators can control every level and the order in which it appears. We built the underwater world and its set-piece moments in Unity, focusing on co-operative play and on visuals that maximise the thrill of the hunt.
